10 Must-See Spots and Things to Do In Maui

If you are planning a trip to Maui, I am genuinely so excited for you! This is the most beautiful place on earth and you’re going to have such a wonderful time. There is a lot to see and do while you’re here and as someone who is lucky enough to live here I have the insider knowledge on the best spots to go and things to experience — and now I'm sharing the love with this list of my top 10 favorite things to do in and around Maui!

The best part is that this list has something for any age, so whether you’re traveling solo, with small children, or with your whole extended fam, I've got you covered!

1. TAKE A DIP AT IAO VALLEY

Immerse yourself in untouched Maui, surrounded by lush, sheer cliffs to feel super refreshed for the rest of your adventures. Iao valley features a river that flows down the mountain into a peaceful rainforest that offers beautiful views including the iconic Iao needle. Bathe in the cool waters of the lao valley for the experience of a lifetime. Visit the state park website for more information.

2. SHAVED ICE FROM ULULANIS

If you’re looking for a delicious treat, stop by this local establishment that offers signature Hawaiian shaved ice. If you’ve had shaved ice elsewhere you need to try Ululanis. Nothing compares to their homemade syrups and they use tons of local fresh fruit for flavorings. If you have kids (or cranky adults), don’t be afraid to use Uluanis as bribery for anything. My pro tip? Don’t forget to ask for ice cream on the bottom and top with a snow cap. You’ll thank me later! Check out their website for more information.

3. SUNSET SAIL ON SAIL MAUI

There’s nothing like seeing Maui from out on the water. For the best views and experience, I highly recommend Sail Maui. And, if you can, take their sunset cruise! During your cruise, you’ll get to see Molokai, Lanai, and Kahoolawe.  Many times you can see dolphins and other wildlife while you enjoy a drink from the bar. I mean, does it get any better than that!? Visit their website for more information.

4. EAT AT MAMA’S FISH HOUSE

If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience dining on fresh fish, you have to go to Mama’s Fish House. Mama’s Fish House has been a beloved fixture in Maui since 1973! This award-winning restaurant allows visitors to take a step back into old Hawaii and dine on delicious food that you’ll be thinking about for the years to come! I highly recommend lunch because it’s a bit more casual and you can really enjoy the views. They book up too, so I recommend booking as soon as you can. Here is their website for more information.

5. SEE TURTLES AT HOOKIPA

If you’re looking for a beach with great waves and views, you have to visit Hookipa Beach. Located on the north shore of Maui, this beach offers the perfect waves for swimming or surfing. BUT, the best part about this beach is that there is a protected area for sea turtles, with many of them sleeping on the beach at night. The Hawaiian word for turtle is honu, and seeing these majestic creatures in person is breathtaking. The beach closes at 7pm, but you can usually spot turtles coming to the shore before closing. Visit the website for more information.

6. SEE A WATERFALL AT TWIN FALLS

Are you dreaming of seeing a Hawaiian waterfall but worried about committing to a full day in the car with your kids to Hana? I got you!! Twin Falls is perfect for families with small kids. It’s a super easy hike in, and depending on how much rainfall we’ve had, you can jump in and enjoy the water. Visit the website for more information.

7. WALK THROUGH HONOLUA FOREST

Enjoy a hike through the Honolua forest and soak in the beauty and history. Explore the many beautiful trails that lead you to Honolua bay! There are several different trails to suit your family’s experience level. Trust me; the scenery does not disappoint! Plus, Honolua Bay is an amazing snorkel spot by summer and a world-renowned surf break by winter. Visit the website for more information.

8. SWIM AT BABY BEACH LAHAINA

If you book a family photography session with me, you just might have your session with me at this beach as it’s by far my fave photo spot! Pro-tip, pack up early to get a spot because this beach can get crowded. The beach is protected by a reef so the water is always calm! It’s full of reef heads, and occasional turtles and tropical fish are seen! Great calm waters, bring a floatie and a cooler, and hang out for the day. My pro tip is to bring an umbrella to this beach as shade is pretty limited. Visit the website for more information.

9. SOUVENIRS FROM PAIA TOWN OR MAKAWAO

While everything from ABC store seems cute and Hawaiian, I highly encourage you to support local businesses and artists.  if you’re in the market for some souvenirs, there are lots of beautiful shopt so check out. Take a stroll through the boutiques in Paia or Makawao! Personally, I love Nuage Bleu in Paia, Soha in Lahaina or Wailea, and the Monarch Collective for local art/ jewelry (Makawao).

10. EAT A MALASADA

Think — Hawaiian donut. Malasadas are said to have originated in Portugal, and when the Portuguese came to Hawaii to work in the sugar and pineapple industries - they brought along their favorite treat. Welll, I’m glad it stuck with the islands. My fave spots are Manuela Malasada in Lahaina, and Komodas in Makawao

MAUI FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY

Of course, my number eleven top favorite thing to do in Maui is photographing your beautiful family! You’ve planned the adventure of a lifetime in one of the most beautiful places on Earth, so I highly recommend booking a family photography session with me (if you haven’t already). I hope you found some ideas for your upcoming Hawaiian vacation. Mahalo!
